A František KUPKA masterpiece auctioned off in Rennes
The White Horse and the Saint Ann chapel by the Sea, Trégastel 1909
A white horse is cantering by the Saint Ann chapel in Trégastel, where Kupka regularly stayed from 1896 on. The wilderness and solitary landscapes he discovers there soothe and inspire him.
Our painting is composed of a large diagonal made of the chapel's low wall and of the pathway. The horse follows the road, its shadow being cast on the wall, while the calvary's shadow is reflected, very symbolically, upon the stone facade of the chapel, which occupies the painting's right side.
The whole is punctuated by several vertical elements that give rythm to the composition : calvary, gate, ridge, cross's shadow, horse's legs...
Kupka is renown for his excellent draftsmanship. His touch is unsurprisingly skilled, the horse's drawing is unrestricted and its pace's delivery perfectly mastered. All is spontaneously drawn, no overpainting is discernible.
The palette is characterized by hues of yellow, red and blue, heightened by the artist's signature green. The same colour harmonies can be found in the iconic Planes by colours (Great Nude) painted in 1909 (The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York). The yellow camaieu of the chapel and wall’s stones is the same as that used in Yellow Spectrum (Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou, Paris) painted in 1907 (see above detail).
This coherence in Kupka's palette can be explained by his active searches on colour and by his symbolic expressive force, resulting from Goethe's reflexions and Chevreul's work.
Early 1900s is a period of mixed influences for the artist, who explores and absorbs Art Nouveau, Fauvism and Expressionism, on a background of mystical and Symbolist inspiration. The diversity of the artworks produced between 1905 and 1910 demonstrates that, throughout seemingly chaotic influences and researches, Kupka was following a coherent personal path. Our 1909 painting is no exception to this logic and shows similarities with some of the time's major creations, after what the artist will tip into abstraction.
The two major representations in the painting are the horse and the chapel, both elements of strong symbolic force. The horse is a recurring theme in Kupka's Symbolist period, emblematic of another work inspired by a stay in Brittany around 1901-1902 : Ballad of Epona (Joy) (Narodni Gallery, Prague), depicting two naked women riding on a beach. Present in numerous traditional tales and legends of both Breton and Slavic origins, the horse epitomizes movement, life, freedom and sensuality. The white horse's shadow evokes the end of the day, but its elongation brings a surreal touch to the scene and transforms the animal into a fantastic creature.
The chapel is obviously a religious symbol. But as it is painted here, it also evokes a shelter. The accent drawn on its triangular facade makes it a steady counterpoint to the horse's race. The yellow shades of the stone blocks magnifies both the low wall and the chapel. Yellow is symbolically associated with the sun, comforting and life-bringer - an important colour in Kupka's artwork.
The charming little chapel of Trégastel is thus transformed, under Kupka's paintbrush, into a mystical icon adorned with the calvary's shadow.
The observer is facing a choice : head towards the chapel's peacefulness or follow the white horse in its flight.
